The resilient neighbourhood

The resilient neighbourhood

The core

The resilient neighbourhood brings the Resilience Compass (Weerbaarheidskompas) to a real residential neighbourhood. From the five steps of ISAFE to a neighbourhood-wide action agenda, with residents, the area developer, the municipality and suppliers of vital services at the same table.

We do not start from the threat, but from what people in a neighbourhood hold dear. We call that positive resilience: not only averting danger, but protecting what is there. From that starting point we map the vulnerabilities, from water to wifi, and translate them into measures an area can actually carry out.

Together with Blauwhoed

We work with area developer Blauwhoed on the question of how collective self-reliance becomes part of area development from the very start. Blauwhoed is working on a project combining homes with social functions: a school, a day-care centre, a gym, hospitality, a shared garden and a communal living room. Together we are examining how that set-up can stay resilient over the longer term, and how management and ownership are arranged after completion.

At the knowledge table The Resilient Neighbourhood we brought together experts from construction, finance, care, landscape architecture and research. Read the account in the news item Knowledge table The Resilient Neighbourhood.

What it delivers

  • A picture of the critical dependencies in the neighbourhood, from energy and water to payments, care and connectivity
  • A neighbourhood-wide action agenda with an owner for every action
  • A participation platform that lets residents, entrepreneurs and professionals prepare and act together
  • Insight into what management and ownership require to keep the neighbourhood resilient ten years from now
